STEPHEN M. KATZ, ASC
Director of Photography
Stephen M. Katz studied design and photography at the California Institute of the Arts and at Art Center College of Design. In the early 1970s, Katz was on
his way to New York to open a photography studio when he was asked to shoot an independent film being produced by Jonathan Damme for Roger
Cormans New World Pictures. This was the company that would provide the freewheeling and fast-paced basic training for directors
Francis Coppola, Peter Bogdanovich and Martin Scorcese, and cameramen Lazlo Kovacs and Vilmos Zigmond.
During the next ten years Katz worked
as a cinematographer for Roger Corman, Crown International, Avco Embassy, and American International Pictures, where he shot such cult classics
as Switchblade Sisters, Pom Pom Girls (which out grossed Jaws in France), and Kentucky Fried
Movie.
After moving up to the majors, Stephen Katz has received Director of Photography credit on more than fifty movies, television and cable productions. He has provided highly-acclaimed images in every film genre, from the original Blues Brothers to the recent Academy Award winning Gods and Monsters. Katz was the Director of Photography on the film adaptations of Marsha Normans Night Mother, Arthur Millers The American Clock and James Agees Death in the Family. He has also received considerable attention for his cinematography on large musical productions like Disneys Gepetto and Hallmarks Mrs. Santa Claus.
Last year, Stephen Katz served as cinematographer (and received his first directing credit) on The Lot, a Los Angeles based series currently airing on American Movie Classics. Most recently, he shot the soon-to-be released feature Her Majesty in New Zealand, and has just finished photography on the motion picture The Dust Factory, a Felliniesque fantasy staring Armin Mueller- Stahl, directed by Eric Small.
When not on location, Stephen Katz lives in Salt Lake City, Utah, where he enjoys sports and the outdoor life of the Wasatch Mountains.
